Choices

Your eBookstore choices

Deciding upon the ebook format(s) to which your manuscript should be converted is primarily a matter of choosing the online bookstore(s) through which you first wish to offer it for sale.

The main players in online ebook sales are the Amazon Kindle Stores, Apple iBookstores and leading UK retailers such as Blackwell's, Foyles, eBooks by Sainsbury's, Kobo Books and Waterstones—all of which (with the exception of Amazon) have adopted the ePub format.

Amazon Kindle Stores

If choose to offer your ebook for sale by only one online seller, there can be little argument that the Amazon Kindle Store should be your choice—not least because of its unmatched popularity, driven by the international success of the Kindle ereader, and Amazon's attractive payments régime (see Your Earnings).

Professionally produced Kindle ebooks are scripted using XHTML/HTML5 and CSS code (see Glossary) and must adhere strictly to a structure defined by Amazon to ensure 100% compatibility with Kindle ereaders, Kindle tablets and official Kindle apps for desktop, laptop and mobile platforms.

There are currently 11 country-specific Kindle Stores serving the UK, USA, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Spain.

All Kindle Stores offer DRM protection against copying.

Apple iTunes iBookstores
Country-specific Apple iBookstores now serve 51 countries throughout the world, allowing customers to purchase and download epub-format titles to view on their iPads and iPhones.

All ebooks accepted for publication by iBookstores must strictly adhere to the coding and structure specified for ePub-format titles specified by the International Digital Publishing Forum.

Apple iBookstores also offer DRM protection.

If you wish to open a direct content provider account with iTunes to upload ebooks yourself, you will need to (a) open an iTunes account, having first obtained an ITIN or EIN tax ID from the American Inland Revenue Service and (b), download Apple's iTunes Producer software, which only runs on Apple computers. A Windows or Linux version of iTunes Producer is not currently available.

UK bookshop chains and supermarkets
The online versions of the UK's biggest high street retail chains—including Blackwell's, eBooks by Sainsbury's, Foyles and Waterstones—now all offer ebook downloads in ePub format. The titles produced for our clients—be they publishers, authors or literary agents—are available to those major retailers, as well as to some 2,500 public and school libraries world wide, in our role as an epub-format content provider to the our partner aggregator.
